Australia’s Emission Reduction Target Totally Inadequate Bill Shorten

Australia’s Emission Reduction Target Totally Inadequate

Hon Bill Shorten MP
Parliament House
Canberra
ACT 2602

I am writing to you as a grandparent, deeply concerned about the lack of any action by the Coalition government to reduce carbon emissions, and the impact this will have on future generations.

I was particularly disappointed with Australia’s position on its emissions reduction target, stated at the United Nations Climate Summit, of only 5% below 2000 levels by 2020; and that Australia would not commit to a post-2020 target until it reviewed the targets of all its trading partners and competitors, without a specific timeline.

In view of the powerful message from US President Barack Obama that climate change has surpassed terrorism as the biggest threat to life on earth, this response from Australia can only be seen as totally inadequate.

I understand that America’s emission reduction target is 17% by 2020, Germany’s 40%, and China’s 45%.

I note that you are quoted in The Saturday Paper 27 September saying that the Prime Minister should place climate change on the agenda at the upcoming G20 leaders’ meeting in Brisbane in November.

I strongly request that you continue to urge the Government to do this, to avoid further embarrassment for Australia regarding its shameful position on this subject.

Yours,
